About us

Everybody has a style. Finding it is the hard part.

Appir is a search engine built for fashion. Not a general search bar with a fashion skin, but one that understands garments the way shoppers describe them.

What Appir is

Appir Search is the search bar inside a fashion webshop. A shopper types what they are looking for in their own words, a full sentence if they like, and Appir turns that into category, colour, fit, length, fabric, occasion and every other attribute a garment has. It then shows the products that match, in the look of the shop's own theme.

It exists because of one conviction: everybody has a style, but describing that style in words is genuinely difficult. Fashion vocabulary is vague, personal and inconsistent, and product data rarely contains the words a shopper would use. Appir sits exactly at that gap, between how people talk about clothes and how catalogs are tagged.

Where we came from

Appir started as a consumer app: swipe through clothes, Tinder-style, and get a feed that learns your taste. The personalised feeds worked, and building them taught us how to read style from garments and behaviour.

It also showed us that the real problem sits two steps earlier. Before a feed can be personalised, a shopper has to be able to find things at all, and that is where webshops fail: on the search bar of the shop itself. So we took what we had built, the garment understanding and the ranking, and put it where the discovery actually happens.

Today Appir is a B2B product for fashion webshops, live on Shopify first, with the same purpose it started with: help people find their style.

Why fashion needs a better search

Site search is the highest-intent moment in a webshop, and in fashion it performs worst. The Prefixbox 2024 Search Benchmark Report, based on data from the first half of 2024 across six retail industries, puts numbers on it.

Across all industries, a small share of shoppers uses search, yet they generate more than half of online revenue. Fashion is the outlier in the wrong direction: the highest share of searches that return nothing, the lowest conversion after a search, and the lowest share of revenue coming from search. The report's own conclusion for fashion is that shoppers need better product discovery: search that understands natural-language queries, backed by an enriched catalog with the right attributes. That is what Appir is built to be.

16%
of shoppers use site search, across all industries
55%
of online revenue comes from those searchers
10.7%
of fashion searches return zero results, the highest of any industry (6.0% overall)
39%
of fashion revenue comes from search, the lowest of any industry (55% overall)
